Gut flora consists of microorganisms living in the digestive tract. However, not all of them are beneficial. The good one is called “probiotics” or “good bacteria”. The balance of gut flora is greatly related to human’s health. Many factors can affect such balance, including stress, improper diet, medication or certain therapy. When it is out of balance, people may experience bloating, indigestion, constipation or diarrhea. There are different types of probiotics in the gut.

One of the most common type is “Lactic acid bacteria”. They play an important role in maintaining digestive health. They can promote a healthier digestive system, increase nutrient absorption, and promote regular bowel movement. They can also boost immunity. The following three species are very important to the body. Supplementing these probiotics can maintain a positive balance of intestinal flora.

1) Bifidobacterium longum:

They are able to maintain the number of intestinal flora, balance the beneficial bacteria and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, promote intestinal peristalsis, prevent occasional diarrhea and constipation. They can also stimulate immune function and boost the immune system.

2) Lactobacillus acidophilus:

These “good bacteria” can be found in the mouth, gut and vagina. It can increase the number of probiotics, balance intestinal health and inhibit the growth of bad bacteria. Clinical studies have proven it may assist in stabilizing cholesterol and promoting cardiovascular health

3) Lactobacillus buigaricus (Bifidobacteria bifidum):

Bifidobacteria are one of the major genera of bacteria that make up the gut flora. Bifidobacteria bifidum belong to this family. They can help the synthesis of vitamin B complex, vitamin K and folic acid. They also promote nutrient absorption. In addition, researches show they can increase immune responses in infants.

Because of the importance of gut flora to the host’s health, people who have stressful life, poor digestive function, low fruits and vegetables consumption or occasional constipation, are highly recommended to include lactic acid bacteria in their diet through taking health supplement or foods.
